CNN alleges that Sony and nVidia are in talks to provide graphics technology for the Playstation3; we round up the facts...
Having been beaten by ATI to provide Microsoft with the graphics technology for the Xbox successor and left only with Infinium Labs āPhantomā PC-in-a-box, CNN is today reporting that nVidia are currently in talks with Sony Computer Entertainment to provide graphics technology for the Playstation3.
Naturally we take everything from a non-videogame specialist publication with a pinch of salt, however itās certainly worth looking at the facts.
According to an analyst credited in the report as working for American Technology Research, āThey are in discussions with Sony for the PS3ā.
However it should be noted that in the past SCE have relied on their own technology to power the graphics units behind the PSOne and Playstation2, so why would SCE change this?
Well itās been widely rumoured that development of the PS3 isnāt going as smoothly as SCE would have hoped for; the very nature of the new āCELLā processor believed to power the machine is taking up a lot of time and resources, so outsourcing other areas could be helpful for SCE.
Secondly itās a well-known fact how messy the PS2 actually was from a development point of view, with comparisons from developers to the Sega Saturn. The fabled āEmotion Engineā hasnāt actually lived up to everything SCE initially claimed, whilst the problems of having only 4MB of visual memory were well documented during the first and second generation of PS2 titles. Working with a company such as nVidia would allow SCE to include powerful graphics technology that would be easier for developers to work with and allow for immediate results early on.
Weāre still not entirely convinced, however itās worth noting that nVidia will certainly want to get back into the videogames industry realising it as a valuable factor to their financial earnings; weāll have more on the situation soon.
