id announces that production has begun on Doom 4, so prepare for a fourth wave of hell's armies...
id Software has announced that production has started on Doom 4. The Texas based developer also revealed that it is currently recruiting for the project, with the job listings section of its website listing PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 as applicable platforms for all advertised projects.
Although the projects being advertised to prospective applicants are posted as "Unannounced", all 13 of them list PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 as relevant platforms. Some even specify that successful candidates will be working on titles utilising id's Doom and Quake game properties.
"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."
id hasn't revealed an estimated time of arrival for Doom 4 at the moment. However, as the developer has only specified that production has begun and they're still actively recruiting for the project, late 2009 may be the earliest we can expect to see Doom 4 on shop shelves.
The last Doom game was released on the PC (2004) and Xbox (2005), where gamers were tasked with fighting off the demons of hell in a research facility on Mars.
The only other announced project in development at id is Rage, which promises to break new ground for the studio. Pegged as a genre straddling FPS and driving game, Rage will be set on a post-apocalyptic earth following a comet strike.
id has previously stated that it intends to break with its conventional corridor shooters and introduce elements of non-linearity (a la Crysis and Bioshock) to Rage's FPS gameplay. Tim Willits, Lead Designer and Co-owner of id, has previously stated that the driving gameplay is influenced by MotorStorm and Burnout.
