We look at the agreements in place to bring the Xbox2 together...
Details on the recent agreements signed by Microsoft with leading chip manufacturers have come to light, shedding some interesting information on what to expect from the Xbox2.
Reports have revealed that the current project-name for the Xbox2 is âXenonâ and that under agreement with the likes of IBM and ATi, Microsoft will license technology designed by these companies instead of purchasing off-the-shelf components that featured in the Xbox.
There are two reasons behind this; firstly Microsoft will essentially become the manufacturer of the components, paying each firm a royalty fee in a similar manner to both Sony and Nintendo. This gives Microsoft far more control over itâs own platform and should eradicate any similar problems to the Microsoft & nVidia dispute that occurred last year.
The second less apparent reason is that a more proprietary system will help to avoid the rise of hacks that have besieged the Xbox. This has been a major problem for Microsoft in the current generation, with hackers targeting the machine specifically because of its PC origins.
It certainly casts doubt on what to expect from the âXenonâ however; a large portion of the Xbox success can be attributed to its ease of development, developers enjoy the fact that itâs similar to a PC and as such the format has benefited from the best third-party titles â“ a more specific machine may cause developers further troubles.
Itâs believed ATi will license technology based on its Radeon chipset for use as the âXenonâ graphics technology, whilst itâs widely believed that a version of IBMâs PowerPC will provide the main architecture for the format.
