Xbox Live Next-Gen Rumours News

Rumours hit the web that next-gen Live will be split into 'Silver' and 'Gold' services...
The following is all rumours and hearsay â“ none of this has been officially (or for that matter unofficially) confirmed by Microsoft. Now thatâs out of the way, lets cut to the chase. Rumours have hit the web that suggest the future of Xbox Live with suggestions that the online service will be split up into two forms, a free âSilverâ service and a subscription based âGoldâ service. Now before the more âfinancially awareâ readers start baying for the blood of Messers Allard and Gates, itâs worth pointing out that the next-generation of Live is already known to offer a lot more than the current set up.
Following last weeks announcement that Microsoft have signed a deal with Limelight Networks to provide a whole host of downloadable content from movies and music, the rumours have also suggested that player profiling will become a major part of the Live experience with everything from avatars, mottos, and reputation points included. Most of the features are shared between both the Silver and Gold versions except for a couple of options, the most notable omission in the Silver package, according to the rumour, is the ability to engage in multiplayer online play â“ although the suggestion is made that the next-gen service will include free Live weekends, but whether this means multiplayer games can be played over the Silver version every weekend or just on designated weekends isnât discussed by the rumours.
Other benefits from the next-gen Live service are rumoured to include the ability to communicate with video in addition to the already established text and audio options. Xbox owners frustrated by the lack of CD info on the original console will be pleased by the rumour that Xbox 360 will include track info as well as the ability to stream media across from Windows XP â“ interactive screensavers are also rumoured to be included in the next-gen console.
Further to that, rumours that the Xbox360 console itself will have a level of customisation fail to go away with suggestions that the console will include changeable face plates â“ perhaps the pattern bordered power buttons featured in yesterdayâs OurColony image is a nod to that?
We wait with baited breath for confirmation from Microsoft about the next-gen version of Live (hopefully some of this will be unveiled on the forthcoming MTV presentation), but if even a small amount of the rumours turn out to be correct then the Live service will certainly gain a lot more interest from gamers whoâve stayed out of the current online experience.
Weâll have more shortly...
