Square-Enix confirms development of Final Fantasy XI with the promise of more to come...

Saving the best till last, Microsoft today finally celebrated getting Square-Enix on board with confirmation that Final Fantasy XI would be heading to the Xbox 360.

A small glimpse of the game was provided, however the fact alone that Microsoft have courted Square-Enix is cause for celebration, with the promise that thereâs more to come from the Japanese giant.

From the brief footage provided during the presentation itâs immediately apparent that the developers have started from scratch when taking the MMORPG to the Xbox 360, and as such the game looks absolutely magnificent â“ think Final Fantasy cinematics in real-time, onlineâ¦

âWeâre honored that Square Enix will make games like âFINAL FANTASY XIâ for the millions of Xbox® fans who have anticipated this historical moment for quite some time,â said Robbie Bach, senior vice president and chief Xbox officer in the Home and Entertainment Division at Microsoft. âTogether, we will chart a new course for the future of video game entertainment.â

âXbox has become a major force in video-game innovation, and we couldnât be more captivated by the Xbox 360 canvas,â said Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix. âAs the worldâs first cross-platform online game with more than 500,000 users, âFINAL FANTASY XIâ will take advantage of the incredible power of the Xbox 360 platform, immersing gamers in spellbinding stories that come to life in high definition and through collaborative online gameplay.â

Sadly Microsoft kept mum when it came to specific details, particularly in terms of subscription fees and exactly what this adaptation will offer above the PS2/PC versions besides the obvious graphical overhaul. What was an interesting announcement was the news that the Xbox version will share connectivity with the PC version through 'Play Online', although actual details about the feature weren't revealed.

Rest assured weâll track down Square-Enix and try to find out more very soonâ¦
