MercruryNews reveals technical specifications of the Xbox2, however we wouldn’t count on anything just of yet…
MercuryNews today reported some interesting details regarding the Xbox2; once again weād like to state that such information is still speculative and that nothing can be taken as a done deal until an official announcement.
That said the article certainly seems to agree with a lot of what is coming from within the industry; rightfully claiming that Microsoft want to drive down the cost of the Xbox successor in an attempt to build a stronger business model behind it, as opposed to taking a loss in order to grab hold of a market share.
In addition the article revealed some speculative technical specifications on the Xbox successor, which include:
- Three custom IBM designed 64-bit microprocessors. As most people will know processors have been capped at 32-bit for a substantial period; these chips are currently used in Appleās high-end G5 PowerMac computers, backing up claims that developers are currently working on preliminary titles based on these computers.
- As we already know, ATi will provide the graphics processor for the Xbox successor. Itās claimed that this will be faster then the upcoming R400 chip for PCs; helping games to support high-definition as standard.
- The unit is preliminary being developed with 256MB DRAM, however this could be upgraded to 512MB based on what Sony puts in the Playstation3.
The article claims that compatibility with Xbox titles is still under question, suggesting that the costs involved in hardware and licensing could be too high for Microsoft to consider.
The article backs up the claim that the Xbox2 wonāt feature a HDD; however weāre still extremely doubtful about this one. As regular TVG readers will know, we received an anonymous e-mail from somebody claiming to be close to the design and development of Xbox2 who suggested this last year. If Microsoft are serious about online and Xbox Live! then the system quite frankly depends on a HDD, itās also vitally important towards the drive to Home Entertainment and something that weād be surprised not to feature in the Playstation3.
This opinion was backed up in the article by Tim Sweeney, CEO Epic Games, who stated, āI would really like to see a hard disk drive in the box, for a console to really have a useful online component, it has to have the hard drive to store downloaded maps and other data.ā ā“ We quite agree.
Whatever happens we can certainly expect more concrete information at the Game Developers Conference, which is being held in San Jose in March.
