We give you the full low-down on X’02 including Rare, Xbox Live! and titles in the line-up…
An air of doubt and suspicion surrounded the atmosphere prior to Xā02, could Microsoft win back and convince an audience of sceptical European journalists that the Xbox is in a secure position coming up to the lucrative Christmas season.
Always eager to flash their cash, the event was held in the La Isla Magica theme park located in Seville, and reportedly one of the largest resorts in Spain. The opportunity of free booze along with theme park rides without queues did a lot to appease the audience, however the main judgement would come with the official presentation.
The presentation started well, flashy lights, booming sounds and the āChampagneā advert projected onto a wall of water mist did a lot to set the mood. However as soon as Sandy Duncan, VP Europe, took the stage, you couldnāt help but get the feeling that Microsoft are more then happy and content with second place in the European market. Claims of improved sales and a willingness to learn were attributed to the recent price reduction. The announcement that the wonderful Controller-S will finally make a European appearance on November 1st was welcoming, and gave sign that Microsoft are willing to listen to the consumer.
Onto the games, where Project Gotham Racing 2 made itās first European emergence. Despite only showing a brief clip, we managed to get the impression that the sequel will offer more of the same. Visually there didnāt appear to be a massive improvement, however the city of Edinburgh was instantly recognisable and the new Ferrari Endizo looks to be a good addition to the roster.
Surprisingly there was no demonstration of Halo 2, arguably there was no real need seeing that itās been publicised across every corner of the globe, however it would have certainly gone some lengths to winning over a dubious crowd of cynical gaming journoās.
The big announcement came in the way of a new title. Sudeki promises to be the first epic RPG for the Xbox, and is already looking extremely impressive at this early stage. Keep an eye out for our extensive look at the UK developed title, thatās being hailed as āFinal Fantasy in Real-Timeā.
Finally concrete details of Xbox Live! in Europe were announced. March 14th -exactly a year after the European launch of the console ā“ will see the release of Xbox Live! in eight European countries (UK, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Nederlandās, Italy) for a suspected retail price of 50 euros. That price will include a yearās subscription to the online service, the voice communicator and two bundled titles - Whacked and Re-Volt. The announcement proves to be a very attractive package, and finally we got the belief that Microsoft is serious about online gaming in Europe, unbelievably the Xbox Live! booths proved to be starkly quiet and attracted less interest then we believed they would, perhaps a sign that European gamers arenāt ready for Xobx Live! yet.
Of course the major announcement and the one that we were all waiting for, was the official announcement of the acquisition of Rare. After a short interlude depicting various Rare characters mingling with each other that ultimately led to Conker chopping the Xbox logo into the word Rare, the elusive Stamper brothers took the stage. The reported figure is somewhere around the $375 million mark for Nintendoās 49%, an astronomical fee that many consider to be way too high. However the fact remains that Microsoft have the money and they need the big name profile games that Rare can bring. Kameo made its first public appearance after the format change from the GameCube, unfortunately it did little to impress but weāre hoping that the trademark Rare gameplay will prevail. Despite all the rumours Perfect Dark was not shown, which came as a big surprise to all the attendees, is there really nothing to show from the two years in development? Microsoft buying Rare is undoubtedly a wise move form Microsoft, however there was no getting away from the fact that the announcement was rather subdued and that the short-term impact on sales of the Xbox will be limited. It would have been nice to see more games and unfortunately it looks like weāll have to endure the trademark wait before we see the first string of Rare developed Xbox titles, wait we will thoughā¦
Unfortunately with several major delays it looks to be a very barren Christmas period for Xbox owners, only a handful of titles stand out with Ubisoftās Splinter Cell heading the list, letās hope that title doesnāt see any delay otherwise it could be disastrous. Despite this, the future looks bright for the Xbox, there is a vast number of quality titles on the horizon which are increasingly beginning to find innovative and impressive ways to use the superior technology of the machine, titles like Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Fable and B.C are only possible on the machine and are already looking amazing and combined with the launch of Xbox Live! 2003 looks to be the year for Microsoft and Xbox owners.
Keep an eye out for our extensive look at the titles displayed at Xā02, including B.C, Fable, Sudeki, Steel Battalion, Unreal Championship, MGS2: Substance and many moreā¦
