Rumours emerge that the strategy series may be returning for a new instalment, courtesy of Irrational Games...
Running from 1994 to 2001, the sci-fi strategy franchise, X-COM, may be about to emerge once more, thanks to Bioshock developer, Irrational Games.
Pieced together by Shacknews, a trail of breadcrumbs leading to the conclusion that a new X-Com is in development at Irrational has been unearthed, and is certainly compelling. According to the article, a list of titles developed by Irrational appears on a cached website for the studio's lawyers, Fierst, Pucci & Kane. Identifying a number of games produced by Irrational such as Bioshock and Freedom Force, there's one surprising addition: X-COM...
From there, the trail leads to Irrational's parent company, publisher Take-Two Interactive. Besides acquiring the Boston-based studio in 2006, Take-Two also purchased the rights to the X-COM brand the previous year from Atari, which in a story that sounds like the Old Lady who swallowed a fly, bought the franchise from Hasbro in 2001, which acquired original X-COM publishers Microprose, in 1998.
For now, development of a new X-COM remains purely speculative, but don't be too surprised if the little green men return...
