New sales figures suggest that the Wii has leapfrogged the Xbox 360, although they contradict previous numbers...


MCV are reporting that according to figures from Japanese economics resource Nikkei Net Kansai, the Nintendo Wii now sits atop the worldwide next gen console sales lists for the first time since the 16-bit wars with their SNES machines.

The figures for worldwide sales so far have been estimated using information from NPD, Enterbrain, and GfK, which make-up the prime sales tracking bodies from America, Japan and Germany respectively. They show that, at the end of July, the Wii had sold 9.02 million units worldwide. The same figures suggest that, despite a one year hedstart, the Xbox 360 was trailing the Wii by over 200,000 sales (8.8 million sales in total). The PlayStation 3 is flagging behind both of them with 3.7 million sales.

However, the Nikkei Net Kansai's numbers strongly contradict recent figures released by Microsoft in July, which suggested that 11.6 million units had been shifted across the 37 countries it was available in at the time.

to 133.21, its simple how the wii can challenge other consoles games like the 360, they have games for the WHOLE family, like wii sports and wii play, i mean can u imagin ur grandmotrher on halo3? or metal gear solid?? no obvioulsy not, they'll probs... [ Read full comment... ]

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but you're wrong, "mrawesome" (can anyone be more generic?). The 360 isn't doing well in Japan and most of Asia, and the PS3 is closing in on the 360 in Europe. I'm not saying that sales = better console... [ Read full comment... ]
