Russian reports hints at a "Daikatana" situation surrounding THQ's promising first-person-shooter...
History has a habit of repeating itself albeit under different circumstances, so rumours of THQ having to actively take a role in the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl to ensure its completion, mirroring those facing Eidos and Ion Storm hardly comes as a surprise - can anybody say Daikatana???
Quoting an unnamed source within GSC Game World, Russian based Gamemag.ru paints a worrying picture for those waiting fervently for the hyped first-person-shooter, suggesting that development is currently at a standstill amongst turmoil within the development team.
The article suggests that THQ ceased bankrolling the project in November 2005 and have appointed a representative to ensure the project is finished, whilst also alleging that the publisher has actively searched for another studio to complete the title.
Of more concern is the suggestion that members of the team have been appointed to another project, along with a number of personnel who were dismissed. The source suggests that the dismissed members may have access to the technology behind the game and alleges they also have access to a brand new engine which is in the works, one which could be used to upgrade the heavily delayed title.
GSC Game World has recently responded to the allegations with an update to the official STALKER website. Confirming that the title is being "actively developed in close cooperation with the publisher", GSC Game World maintains that STALKER is currently in the beta stage of approval.
The team behind the title has been reduced, although solely in the art department where the majority of work has been completed, and noting that only 5 out of 40 people were "dismissed".
The update also responds to the issue of the technology leak, claiming that none of the "designers" who've left have any rights to the game's engine, confirming the existence of a next-generation engine in the process and maintaining that such a leak will have no affect on the game's release.
THQ did address the situation in its last financial report, moving the title into the second half fiscal 2007 (October 2006 - March 2007); so there's still plenty of time yet for it to surface.
TVG will have further information on S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl soon.
