Extensive details on the next title from the creators of ICO…

We previously brought you confirmation of the latest title from ICO creators last week, as now the first specific information on Wanda to Kyozo (Wanda and the Colossus) has become available.

The game is in fact the title referred to previously as NICO, most famously leaked over 18 months ago within an internal DVD that also featured shots from the then-unreleased Project Siren.

Directed by Fumito Ueda and produced by Kenji Kaido, the game is similar to ICO but remains distinctly different and is not a direct sequel.

Much like ICO, the story behind Wanda to Kyozo remains on the strange side of surreal, casting a young boy who rides atop a horse and carries the soulless body of a little girl day and night until he reaches a shrine surrounded by vast wilderness. As the boy lays the girlās body across the shine, lightning strikes, whilst a voice booms down from the heavens, proclaiming that if the boy destroys all the giant statues within the land without regard for his own life, then the soul of the girl will be rescued.

As youād expect the gameās main quest sees the boy having to fight against the colossus statues; weāve seen the one featured across the teaser website and leaked screenshots, but have also been informed that players will have to fight against stone statues that can both swim and fly.

Much like Toby Gardās Galleon, the main dynamic revolves around holding on to the R1 to skirt up the backs of the statues and discover their weak spot. Weāre told that there are many strategies to doing this, such as attacking a statue until it changes its posture to open up its weak spot; whilst youāll also have to ensure that you maintain balance while hanging in the air.

The boy can make use of his horse throughout the game, which serves as transport and a variety of other purposes. The horse is semi-controlled through AI and wonāt run off cliffs or into objects, when youāre not in direct control.

Confirming that the title isnāt a direct sequel to ICO, Kaido-san commented "After we finished development on ICO, I was asking myself whether fans of ICO would really want a sequel, considering that ICO's world and storyline concluded pretty well." Whilst stating that Wanda to Kyozo is a definite departure from the tranquil experience of ICO, claiming "so I decided that we would make something new. ICO was a rather serene game, which might have been a reason why I went on a rebound and felt like making something intense. I wanted to make a game where you could enjoy playing as the main character... The game's fundamental roots aren't different from ICO, but we hope that fans can enjoy the dynamic thrill and the fears of facing a huge enemy."

Wanda to Kyozo is set to be officially unveiled at the forthcoming Tokyo Game Show between September 27th-29th; weāll be sure to bring you more coverage direct from the show.

Shadow of the Colossus exhibits the potential for a video game to be a great work of art. All the extraneous is removed. It is very poetic. I love that it ends in tragedy. Unlike traditional Hollywood, Japan understands that a story can end in a w... [ Read full comment... ]

my whole point to that was that wander is not the boy from ICO. the ICO story took place hundreds of years later therefore it is not a prequel just a related story of the origin of the ICO religon.

p.s. best series ever! and the ending made perfec... [ Read full comment... ]

You's!!!!
Shadow of the Colossus is a prequel to Ico.
Also the ending to shadow was so sad, it wouldve been better if they'd have got the 2 lovers back together.
