GDC'06: Microsoft Unveils XNA Framework/Opens Xbox Live News

By Chris Leyton on 20/03/2006 XNA Studio and Framework take centre stage at GDC as Microsoft opens up its online service to attract MMOs...

Taking the form of an announcement at the 2004 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Microsoft today lifted the wraps from a pre-release version of the first XNA Studio toolset along with the XNA Framework at this week's GDC.

"Developers need a better way to make games and manage the production process," said Chris Satchell, general manager of the Game Developer Group at Microsoft. "XNA Studio enables all developers - from major development studios to the two guys moonlighting on a dream project in their garage or dorm room - to create games in new, more efficient ways."

Designed to reduce escalating development costs and time, XNA Studio comprises a set of tools and technology which will be made available via the community technology preview (CTP), providing the first opportunity for game developers to get their hands on key components.

Within the CTP is a pre-release version of the XNA Build, which provides a structure for orchestrating, debugging and optimising the code pipeline. XNA Build also provides an opportunity to easily identify game asset relationships and dependency information, opening up benefits to the developer such as incremental content builds to identifying unused content.

"Creativity is the core of Ubisoft's success. Since the very early days of Windows(r) and Xbox(r), and now with Xbox 360(tm), XNA and soon Windows Vista (tm), Microsoft has provided us with excellent developer tools, support and online services in addition to great hardware," said Martin Sevigny, director of production technology at Ubisoft Entertainment SA. "With this collaboration, our developers can focus on their creation instead of being constrained by the platform."

Featuring a custom implementation of Microsoft .NET framework along with new libraries to help developers create cross-platform games on Windows Vista and Xbox 360, the XNA Framework provides developers the opportunity to re-use code and assets in multiplatform development, without sacrificing performance or flexibility.

"We've been writing games for the last 15 years as monolithic, single code bases that are growing unwieldy and complex," said Chris Butcher, lead developer at Bungie Studios. "C# on Xbox 360 lets us think about new modes of programming. It lets us get back to creating a game rather than wresting with code, while maintaining the real-time performance that we need."

"We were proud to be a launch partner with Microsoft for Xbox 360 Live Arcade, and we've been pleased with its success so far," said James Gwertzman, director of Business Development at PopCap Games Inc. "Anything that simplifies the process of creating great casual games and lowers the development complexity for Windows and Xbox 360 is something we're happy to support."

Microsoft has also confirmed that it plans to open the Xbox Live platform to external developers and publishers, which should lead to a greater use of the online service amongst third-party titles. Using this platform, developers will be able to create and run their own back-end servers to run alongside Xbox Live, which should go a long way to appeasing some of the criticisms surrounding MMOs via Xbox Live.

This update is expected to appear in the next version of the Xbox Development Kit, which is expected to ship to developers across the world in May. A couple of examples have already been witnessed of the benefits this will have on games, in the shape of the "Spectator" mode in Project Gotham Racing 3 providing the scope for up to 30,000 gamers to watch races in real-time, and the "Live Revenge" and "Save and Share" features in Burnout Revenge.

Microsoft is hoping this decision will provide greater freedom to developers and publishers to create all-new online game experiences, providing an open platform to boost innovation along with the solid foundation of Xbox Live. As noted above it should certainly provide a platform for the Blizzard's and NCsoft's to bring popular MMO titles to the Xbox 360.

also the graphics chip in the 360/ps3 was built around the same time as the x1950xtx/geforce6800ultra cards please take note that the x1950xtx was the flagship card of that generation of card infact it can still make some of the latest cards look lame. so with a similar chip in the 360 its no wonder the 360 can do 1080p on every game, if microsoft decided there next console had to be 20 times more powerfull than this gen it would be a very foolish move and they know it as games producers would find coding on that would be compareable to the ps3 that why the 360 is more popular with developers than the ps3 thats why the 360s got loads more quality games than the ps3 and as it dont have sony slaped on it make it better than the ps3, face it you know the ps3 isnt as good as the 360 but as your a sony fanboy you will never admit your wrong about the ps3 being more powerfull or better cause it just aint

actually it not the other way around post 290 i think your the other way around (why dont you forget what the specs of the ps3 are hel if it cant run 50% of games on it in 1080p then what does that say about how powerfull a system it realy is burnout paradise on 360 it runs in 1080p on ps3 untill a recent update to the game it can run in 1080i basicly 720p as are most game on the ps3 mainly run in 720p other than this really technical sounding memory and graphics RSX lol its just ddr renamed its nothing special and the graphics is limited to 256mb where as the 360 can use at least 512mb as it has 522mb available) on paper the ps3 looks more powerfull but in reality its not, dont bother bringing blu-ray into it either as the 360 can install games onto the hdd maybe new releases that need a lot of space may need to be installed to play them as there compressed on the game disc, at the moment installing games speeds up loading times plus it make the console a lot quieter

How is the xbox 360 more powerful than the playstation 3? It's more the other way round. Microsoft are very cold towards sony's system.

its true you dont need to swap disks anymore thanks to the update so now there realy is nothing to seperate the 360 and the ps3 (we might get multi disks but you can install the games on the hdd making disk swapping a thing of the past)

Well Gamers... The 3 year extened Warranty ( from Date of Purchase ) for the  Microsoft xbox 360 started Nov 22, 2005. As of Saturday they will be going out of warranty.

For any Console repairs, PSR1 is the web site to google. They are  the way to go. 877-PSR-FIX1

by using a standard 64mb memory card show just what a cheap skate you are. go get a 60 or a 120gb hdd instead of your standard card, lol i bet you dont even have a hidef connection either.

oh and yes there is info on memory size to use xbl there has always been a restriction on size due to needing the hdd to play xbox classic games plus downloadable content, go on make a fool of your self and make a claim only itll just get throwen out like you will. go back to playing on your playstations
