The original cast and characters from the movies will provide voice, acting and writing talent...
Entertainment site Variety is reporting that Vivendi will be releasing an officially licensed Ghostbusters game under their Sierra label. The title is due for release during the autumn of 2008 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC from developers Terminal Reality. There will also be casual game titles for PlayStation 2, Wii and DS by Red Fly Studios.
This report comes after Dan Aykroyd (Raymond Stantz) revealed to a Canadian newspaper last May that he was going do motion capture and voice work for an upcoming Ghostbusters game. It appears now, however, that he'll even be writing the game alongside fellow old-skool Ghostbuster Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler), who'll also be voicing his character.
What's more, the original Ghostbusters cast of four will be adding to the voice talent, including the sardonic wit of Bill Murray (Peter Venkman) and Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore). Other cast members of the original films who'll be putting in their two cents of dialogue include Annie Potts (the Secretary), William Atherton (Walter Peck) and Brian Doyle.
Given the cast, it's hardly surprising that the game will be set in the 90s after the second Ghostbusters movie. Apparently New York City will be overrun by various ghostly beasts again, but has the City learnt from its mistakes of Ghostbusters II and given Egon, Venkman, Ray and Winston the respect they deserve?
Vivendi has had some success with licenses of classic films of late, pulling in $125 million (£611,000) and 2.5 million unit sales for Scarface: The World Is Yours. "We noticed we did well on 'Scarface'," said Vivendi Games CEO Bruce Hack, "and were alert for new opportunities to turn iconic film products into games in a way that is a new manifestation of the franchise. 'Ghostbusters' is unquestionably among the small number of movies in that class."
Earlier this year developers Zootfly were reportedly developing a Ghostbusters game after footage was leaked onto YouTube. This project has long since vanished into thin air and Vivendi's game is in no way related.
