The rumours were true, Ubisoft is working on a Revolution first-person-shooter...
Rumours of a Ubisoft first-person-shooter for the Revolution have circled the internet ever since Nintendo first began to talk about its next-generation format. Today those rumours were finally laid to rest as information on Red Steel hit the net by way of an article in the latest issue of Game Informer, a title that Ubisoft has registered as a trademark on March 24th.
Having been impressed by what Nintendo had to say at E3'05, Ubisoft contacted Nintendo's Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto to express their interest in the format and began work on the title immediately. Still working to finalise the design and before the controller made its public debut at the Tokyo Game Show in November 2005, Ubisoft co-operated closely with the technicians and designers at Nintendo.
The actual game allegedly takes influence from the Japanese Yakuza and promises to offer the darker more mature experience that has previously avoided Nintendo formats. Initial information promises a unique gun dynamic based upon the revolution's controller, along with a vibrant music system that accentuates the score based upon the onscreen action.
A "Freeze Shot" feature allows players to target opponents with a greater degree of accuracy, with rewards coming from disarming an opponent by shooting the gun out of their hand instead of taking a headshot for example.
Early reports also hint that players will be able to use a sword within the game which opens up some nifty combo manoeuvres with a gun, both of which are taught along with additional skills by two different mentors within the game.
Because of the Revolution's controller the developers have been able to incorporate more opponents on the vertical scale, as opposed to the traditional console approach of limiting enemy placements on a horizontal basis. The developers liken the experience to playing a first-person-shooter crossed with a light-gun arcade title, whilst suggesting the speed in which players can turnaround is a lot closer to the PC then previous consoles.
With the first information on the title becoming available and talk of publisher's NDA passing soon, look out for official confirmation and a first look very soon.
