ECMA International approves the UMD format as an industry standard for optical discs...
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the UMD format has been approved by the Ecma International, as an industry standard for optical discs.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Ecma is an international authoritative figure governing industry standards and known for its long history in the world of optical discs. Ecma approved the UMD format at the General Assembly held on June 21st 2005, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It will then be submitted to the Joint Technical Committee, established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and will go through fast-track approval as an ISO/IEC JTC 1 standard by the ISO/IEC member countries.
After the recent success of UMD Movies it certainly appears that Sony have made a positive start with its new formats, with the suggestion that consumers are taking to UMDâs; weâll have further information soon.
