Hardware virtualization technology could allow Xbox2 to easily run Xbox titles…
Transitive Corporation, a leading provider of software that enables application emulation across multiple processor and operating systems, today announced the launch of its âQuickTransitâ product line, designed to allow any application to run across another platform without any source code or binary changes.
However whilst such emulation in the past has come at the cost of high processor consumption, Transitive claim that their technology runs without a performance hit and describe it as âhardware virtualizationâ instead of âemulationâ.
During a recent demonstration of the technology, Transitive representatives ran a Linux version of QuakeIII on an Apple Powerbook, with no loss in speed or quality.
Speaking to Wired, Transitive President and CEO, Bob Wiederhold, claimed that such technology would easily allow the Xbox2 (based on a PowerPC design) to easily run Xbox titles which were designed around the Intel main processor.
Whilst nothing has come from either Transitive Corporation or Microsoft to propose that this is in the pipeline, it should suggest that such previous claims about it being an impossibility or coming at a significant cost are not entirely true.
