Atari announce something to make you pine for the innocent days of the 80s, includes artwork and some information...

Transformers are popular, they were, and are a very recognisable brand, way ahead of a lot of the cartoon toy tie-ins we see these days, they were all around quality.

It's hard to remember a decent Transformers videogame off the top of our heads, so this Melbourne House developed title could easily claim the crown as best game of the series. This development team has developed some good games, most notably the wonderful Le Mans 24 Hours that provided an excellent racing experience on the Dreamcast, and later the PS2.

Combining fighting big huge robots, and then driving, as they can transform into cars, this could provide an interesting combination of gameplay. We know that Melbourne House can deliver on the driving, we just hope that they can deliver on the action.

For an interesting point of comparison Polyphony Digital, they of Gran Turismo fame, had a little game called Omega Boost on the PSOne which was a very good mech game. Perhaps racing game developers make good robot fighting developers. Or not. We will see.

The plot revolves around saving the world and freeing little robots called Mini-Cons - who can give the Autobots and Decepticons special powers. Sounds good to us, taking on Megatron and his evil army of Decepticlones should be fun.

Transformers Armada: Prelude to Energon is set to be released in Spring of 2004 on the PlayStation2.

This artwork shows you the kind of level of detail we can expect from the final game, those robots are looking rather sweet, as are the levels. We are curious to see in-game shots however, and more importantly, in motion so we can see how sweet the transforming effects are.

Naturally we'll keep you up-to-date with the latest on this game.
