Patapon developer confirms the production of a co-op multiplayer sequel to the PSP rhythm strategy game...
European gamers may only have managed to lead the tribe of Patapon a few months ago, but it looks like more button-tapping shenanigans will be heading to the PSP in the not-too-distant-future.
In an interview with Weekly Famitsu magazine, translated by US-based 1UP, Patapon designer Hiroyuki Kotani has confirmed that a sequel is already in the works, with a Japanese release date sometime this winter. Not only adding new features like a 'Hero' Patapon, which will play a central role in strengthening the tribal army, Patapon 2 is also set to include co-operative multiplayer gameplay for up to four players.
The implementation of co-op gameplay revolves about the capturing and hatching of giant eggs, which will lie strewn across the single-player campaign. In order to hatch the eggs, gamers will have to work together to move it through a multiplayer map filled with enemies. Succeed in that, and there'll only be the small matter of a hatching ceremony to contend with.
Sadly, it does seem that the exciting prospect of Patapon multiplayer will be restricted to Ad Hoc Wi-Fi, although we'll hold out for some form of game sharing functionality somewhere.
Whilst there's no word on when we can expect Patapon 2 to emerge in Europe, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is yet to confirm the game, hopefully we won't be too far behind its Japanese debut.
