The neuroscientist behind Nintendo's Brain Training games has re-invested his royalties in research...

Professor Ryuta Kawashima, the neuroscientist behind the popular Brain Training games on Nintendo DS, has stated that he hasn't pocketed any of the £11.4 million in royalties that he's received for the series.

Prof. Kawashima told news agency AFP, "Not a single yen [of the royalties] has gone in my pocket." Instead, he has invested the money in research and building two new laboratories at the state-funded Tohoku University where he works.

Under his contract at the university, Prof. Kawashima could have taken up to half of the royalties due to him from the game's stratospheric sales figures (17 million sold worldwide since its Japanese release in May 2005).

However, while he might be willing to lend his appearance and name to the games, Prof. Kawashima is less interested in actually playing them. He admits that he has no time for games as he's so focused on his research.

Prof. Kawashima also spoke of his fears regarding the amount of time children spend playing games:

"What is scary about games is that you can kill as many hours as you want. I don't think playing games is bad in itself but it makes children unable to do what they should do such as study and communication with the family."

Prof. Kawashima even stops his four sons from playing videogames during the week, and limits them to one hour at weekends. He even destroyed one of their games when they didn't play by the rules.

He runs a tight ship then. Thank goodness our parents weren't quite so strict.
