Gaming Steve is at it again with a story on the real development of Snowstorm's eagerly awaited sequel...
Given Diablo 2 went on to change the face of PC online gaming long before the release of World of Warcraft (shifting an estimated four million copies in the process), it's little surprise that Blizzard could be working on the eagerly awaited third title in the series.
Slightly more surprising was the news that Blizzard North had been absorbed into its Irvine studio recently to work on an unannounced project, although the haemorrhaging of key staff members throughout the years led little reason to assume it was business as usual at the studio behind the popular point 'n' slash RPG series.
Today GamingSteve (a close Blizzard source who brought the scope on The Burning Crusade) has not only confirmed the development of Diablo 3 but also revealed the full story behind the title, in a non-committed kind of way at least. Referring to Blizzard as Snowstorm and Diablo 3 as Beelzebub 3, Gaming Steve suggests that Diablo 3 (sorry Beelzebub 3) has been in development for the past four years and was virtually complete at Blizzard North; the only problem was they realised it wasn't actually that much fun, providing the alleged real reason behind the closure of Snowstorm North.
Suggesting that information leaked previously was very close to the mark, if the article is led to be believed, Beelzebub 3 is presented in full 3D and features an intriguing conflict between Heaven and Hell. The primary feature appears to be the ability for items to swap between a light and dark version, something that was allegedly in the Snowstorm North version but purely from a cosmetic point of view as nothing changed in the game. This aspect underwent a complete overhaul to ensure it has a significant impact on the actual game, whilst Gaming Steve ascertains that some WoW based concepts could spill over.
The article concludes with the summary that Snowstorm are in no rush to release Beelzebub 3, but hints that the recent job leak wouldn't have been an accident; hopefully we'll have confirmation of Diablo 3 (sorry Beelzebub 3) soon.
