By Chris Leyton on 09/03/2005 SEGA view Western franchises as key to success, while Japanese market continues through the doldrums...Further details on SEGA Europeâs recent acquisition of The Creative Assembly have come to light, identifying the reasons behind the decision and hopes for the future.
Identifying the strengthening videogame market in Europe and the United States, SEGA-Sammyâs management have identified targeting these areas to strengthen its consumer business, at a time when it describes growth in its native Japan as âsluggishâ.
As a result SEGA-Sammy are placing increasing importance on these territories, promoting the concentration of its management resources and the relocation of its development resources to increase productivity and unification.
Itâs this strategy along with steady financials and strong brands that were behind the decision to acquire the UK developer for $30 million (£15.5 million).
SEGA-Sammy plans to assist The Creative Assembly in its next-generation developments, along with making use of its technology to expand other titles.
The acquisition continues to bolster SEGAâs âWesternâ line-up alongside titles such as The Matrix Online and Football Manager, while placing development emphasis on the territory with results such as the Xbox conversion of Outrun2 and SEGA Superstars.
The underlying tactic also continues to throw concern over the state of videogames within Japan, with huge-selling titles a rarity from its once famed development studios; whether its massive restructuring will reverse the trend however remains to be seen.
