Online options seem crucial to bands establishing themselves according to EA and Harmonix vision...
US retailer GameStop today outlined the true cost of EA's assault on the music/rhythm genre with the forthcoming release of Rock Band. Suggesting that the game will retail for standard price on Xbox 360 and PlayStation3, fans will also have to pick up the instruments separately, listed on GameStop's website as:
Rock Band Drum Set - $79.99
Rock Band Microphone - $39.99
Rock Band Wireless Guitar - $79.99
Rock Band Guitar - $59.99
Suggesting that Rock Band will come much closer to real life instruments and the life of a musician then Activision's "gamey" Guitar Hero series, it's clearly evident that Rock Band's Online options will be crucial to bands establishing themselves - unless of course you're rich enough to whack out the $259.96 that the whole setup will cost. Intriguingly, it also appears that EA will be offering the wireless option, alongside a cheaper wired guitar, that eludes the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 2.
Whether or not start-up bands will be able to charge attendees Microsoft Points at the virtual gigs to recoup some of the costs remains to be seen; however, it certainly seems as though EA, Harmonix and MTV are striving for the next level of music/rhythm titles.

I know this cos I bought Rockband from the States... total cost including shipping and VAT (from customs) and extra postage was just under £130.... cheaper than all this ... [ Read full comment... ]
