Talks On Unified Next-Gen DVD Format `Suspended` News

Toshiba and Sony suspend talks aimed at deciding on a next-gen DVD format according to a Japanese newspaper...
The rumbling towards a next-gen DVD format war continues unabated today after talks aimed at bringing a solution to the impending problem were suspended, according to the Japanese publication Yomiuri. The two main companies in the discussions, Toshiba and Sony, are currently in developing their respective formats, HD-DVD (designed by a conglomerate including Toshiba) and Blu-Ray (headed by Sony) and representatives from both companies have denied that the negotiations had been put on hold.
Attempts to bring about a solution have been going on for several months, but with the first HD-DVD players expected in Japan at the end of the year, and the launch of the Blu-Ray integrated PlayStation3 in Spring 2006 the âwarâ is beginning to look inevitable â“ especially if the Yomiuri report is correct.
Taro Takamine, spokesperson for Sony said that whilst discussions with Toshiba remain open, Sony will not contemplate a jointly developed format commenting that, â"We have no intention on settling on a compromised format that only plays back 20GBâ¦Next-generation optical disks that are robust enough to stay relevant for more than 10 years are required to take advantage of high-definition video and high-quality audio, and the 0.1 mm (Blu-ray) disk structure is advantageous in this regard.â With HD-DVD discs only able to contain 15GB of data, and Blu-Ray up to 25GB, Sony are less than willing to compromise; in fact the Japanese giant will only discuss the matter of a single format with Toshiba.
But the pessimism of an agreement is also matched by Toshiba spokesperson Junko Furuta, who said "We have doubts as to whether the Blu-ray format is a viable technology in terms of production cost. We're also not convinced that consumers would need to store so much data on disks, especially now that internal hard drives are more popular." The Toshiba representative also commented that Blu-ray discs were also more difficult to implement in laptop PCs and in-car navigation systems.
Weâll have more news shortly on the continued impasseâ¦
