Terminal Damage Engine ramped up significantly ahead of the release of Codemasters latest racer...
Famed for delivering realistic damage models and car crashes, Codemasters today announced that TOCA Race Driver 3 will feature a hugely advanced version of the Terminal Damage Engine, offering 100 times the level of damage evident in previous titles.
Thanks to incredible particle effects and a more sophisticated physics engine, sparks fly spectacularly when the car bottoms out and grounds against the tarmac; windscreens shatter, wings get ripped off and spoilers break away and fly from the car. In addition new effects demonstrate incremental damage as crumple zones realistically take damage.
Itās not just the bodywork however; tyres have to be carefully monitored to watch for wear and temperature, radiators will overheat if the coolant system fails complete with smoke billowing from under the bonnet.
The level of damage applies to all of the AI opponents racing on the track, suggesting that itās not always the fastest driver who will cross the finishing line first, but those who employ proper pit-stop strategies.
Throughout the course of a season each race team has a certain budget to spend on car tuning, with up to 27 upgradeable parts including real options from Brembo, Bridgestone Motorsport and OMP.
TOCA Race driver 3 is slated for release on the Playstation2, Xbox and PC in February 2006 (we wouldnāt be too surprised to find an Xbox 360 version following); weāll have further information soon.
