First details on Volition's third instalment in the destruction-heavy series are released...
Following snippets of information from various sources, including corporate financial statements, THQ today finally revealed details on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC shooter, Red Faction: Guerrilla.
Currently in development at the franchise's home, Volition Inc., Red Faction: Guerrilla is a drastic change on the previous two instalments by featuring a third-person perspective and not a first. Set on Mars fifty years after the events of the first game, Guerrilla throws players into a battle for liberation between the Earth Defence Force (EDF) and the newly reformed Red Faction movement.
"Red Faction is one THQ's most successful and critically acclaimed original franchises to date, with a huge global base of loyal fans waiting to join the new revolution," said Brad Carraway, director of global brand management, THQ. "With the game's unique pairing of true physics-based destruction, fast-paced guerrilla warfare style combat, and a massive world to explore - Red Faction: Guerrilla will redefine the limits of open-world gaming."
"Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick," said Mike Kulas, president of Volition, Inc. "With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."
Despite retaining an emphasis on destructible environments and multiplayer functionality, the decision to switch the perspective will surely receive a mixed reception from fans of the series. Whether it'll pay off of course remains to be seen in the coming weeks and month ahead of the game's release.
Sounding like a destructive-heavy version of Total Recall (minus Arnie), Red Faction: Guerrilla is pencilled in for launch during THQ's 2009 fiscal year, running from April 1st 2008 to March 31st 2009.
