Microsoft lift the lid off BioWare's latest Xbox RPG at the Tokyo Game Show...

The opening of the Tokyo Game Show saw Microsoft Game Studios lift the lid on BioWareās Xbox exclusive RPG āJade Empireā.

Set in a world based on mythical China, where sinister events have upset the peaceful harmony of an isolated martial arts school. BioWare describe the game as being a fast-paced martial arts action role-playing-game, featuring furious action along similar lines to Hong Kong action flicks.

Players can master more then 30 fighting styles and a wide range of mystical powers as they embark on a perilous journey, stretching from the Land of Howling Spirits to the lush gardens of the Imperial City. From what we can gather youāre free to swap your style on-the-fly whilst engaging in combat; for example striking with the lightning-fast attacks of the Legendary Fist and then surprising your enemy with a blast of flames from the Fire style.

Itās believed that the magic styles come in two different forms: Spell Styles and Transformation styles. Spell styles use the player's Chi for power, and allow him to launch long-ranged attacks that deal special damage types like fire and energy drain. Transformation styles are special: they are "learned" by capturing the spirit of a defeated monster, and when triggered the character actually transforms into the form of this monster during combat.

In keeping with their recently released āStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicā, āJade Empireā allows players to choose between good and evil, choices that are claimed to follow the player throughout the land, changing the course of interaction with other characters and followers in a manner presumably similar to āFableā.

"We're thrilled that BioWare's next big game will be available only on Xbox," said Ed Fries, vice president of Microsoft game content. "'Jade Empire' is sure to deliver a game experience that's truly unique and exciting with our Xbox fans in mind."

"Jade Empire" is set in a new fantastical world based on mythical China, where sinister events have upset the peaceful harmony of an isolated martial arts school. "Jade Empire" casts players in the role of a martial arts master and lets them choose between good and evil, choices that will follow them throughout the land, changing the course of interaction with other characters and followers. Developed with a revolutionary second-generation Xbox engine, the game will offer fans a stunning visual and gameplay experience.

"BioWare has enjoyed great critical and commercial success working with existing world-class intellectual properties," said Ray Muzyka, joint CEO and co-executive producer at BioWare. "'Jade Empire' is the first totally new role-playing world created at BioWare, and we're very excited about bringing the world of 'Jade Empire' to life."

"BioWare has been thinking about crafting a martial arts action RPG as far back as during development of 'Baldur's Gate,' over five years ago. We can't wait to share this new world with our fans," said Greg Zeschuk, joint CEO and co-executive producer at BioWare.

"The incredible success of 'Knights of the Old Republic' proves that BioWare knows how to make an engaging RPG," Fries said.

Weāre certainly looking forward to checking out āJade Empireā innovative combat system in more depth; you can guarantee weāll have more on this hot title soon.

A good game, I must say, but like KOTOR it is too predictable and your character doesn't talk!! That is what drives me insane: you click the phrase, and your character doesn't say a thing. Otherwise, it is a good game. Good graphics, fun fighting sty... [ Read full comment... ]
