TGS`05 - Anything Revolutionary on TV??? News

By Chris Leyton on 16/09/2005 Nintendo reveals the Revolution's controller; we honestly don't know what to say - best check the direct feed video we've got...

As widely expected Nintendo today took the lid of secrecy surrounding the Revolution controller… and to be quite honest we don’t now what to say.

Going against the grain of every rumour (virtually) and likely to disappoint those longing for headsets or sensory capabilties, the concept backs up Nintendo’s new policy of “All-Access Gaming” and one that the Japanese developer hopes will find appeal to a wider audience.

Nintendo breaks more than 20 years of video game history by abandoning the typical theme of the joypad, introducing an all-new freestyle unit played with just one hand.

The intuitive, pioneering interface, claims to allow players to run, jump, spin, slide, shoot, steer, accelerate, bank, dive, kick, throw and score in a way never experienced in the history of videogames. The controller is built around customisation and expansion, including a “nunchuk” style unit offering the enhanced gameplay that hardcore gamers demand!

“The feeling is so natural and real, as soon as players use the controller, their minds will spin with the possibilities of how this will change gaming as we know it today,” explains Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president. “This is an extremely exciting innovation -- one that will thrill current players and entice new ones.”

The controller apparently gives a lightening quick element of interaction, sensing motion, depth, positioning and targeting dictated by movement of the controller itself – one particular rumor that’s come true.

Incorporated technology will easily allow games from the NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube generations to be controlled, whilst third-party publishers have shown extremely positive support with the flexibility to use as many or few of the controller’s features as they choose.

“Nintendo has long been a trailblazer and this controller design reinforces that reputation,” said Brian Farrell, president of THQ. “We enthusiastically support Nintendo’s next console because we believe their approach of continual innovation is very much in line with our own strategy of creating unique and innovative games for the next generation of hardware.”

“What we’re seeing from this controller is the same thing we saw with Nintendo DS,” said Chuck Huebner, Head of Worldwide Studios, Activision, Inc. “It’s a system that’s designed with an eye on enticing new players to the video game industry, and that’s something we firmly support.”

“Game control is essential – it’s the area where perhaps the most game-play improvement can be made,” said John Schappert, Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Electronic Arts Canada. “While our portfolio represents a full array of titles across all genres, I think our sports titles might be the first to immediately take advantage of what this novel ‘freehand’ type of control has to offer.”

“We were among the first publishers to see the control design in action,” said Serge Hascoet, Chief Creative Offices of Ubisoft. “We’re excited about the new controller and are looking forward to taking advantage of its innovative aspects.”

And just in case that, like us, you find it hard to believe - check out the direct feed trailer for the controller below...

to the haters! i love the wii, there is such a great range of games available, and more often than not at a nice price!!

the educated wii owner will enjoy his wii for years (most of the best games are fairly unpopular and often not even  advertised), kids won't because they're kids, and anyway nothing wrong with putting the controllers down for a while!

and oh yes, f-zero and starfox has to happen !!!

the comments feature is either messed up or an odd design choice, all these articles seem to share the same thread.

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but you're wrong, "mrawesome" (can anyone be more generic?). The 360 isn't doing well in Japan and most of Asia, and the PS3 is closing in on the 360 in Europe. I'm not saying that sales = better console, but one must look at the facts. And by the way, Wii hardware sales smoke the 360 like Cheech and Chong did weed.
