Valve begins the Beta of the Steam Community, a substantial social networking update for the digital distribution system...
Valve Software has today confirmed the launch of a Beta test for the Steam Community, the largest update for the digital distribution system since it launched back in 2004.
Steam currently has over 13 million users, and has received substantial backing from several third-party publishers looking to extend the lifespan of their titles, including Eidos, 2K Games, Activision, THQ, and most recently, id Software. The Community aims to generate many of the aspects of social networking that have come to the fore in recent years, utilising Friends Lists, Groups, Chat, and the ability to schedule matches.
The new features can be accessed via the Community tab on the Steam client, available at steampowered.com.
