Maxis has revealed to TVG that console versions of Spore could come out further down the line...

At a recent Spore event, TVG has learned that console versions of Will Wright's latest opus could be released after the PC game.

While PC and DS versions of the game were on show at the event, Thomas Vu (Spore's Producer) revealed that further console versions could come out further down the line, after the PC game is released.

"We are exploring what we want to do on the console and which console is appropriate for Spore," said Vu. "It's natural for us to start out on the PC because you can do a lot of these things. Just think about something like controls: RTS controls on the console haven't been the best, that's why you don't see very many RTS games on them.

"So, there are lots of questions like that we've had to answer and technically we have to figure out - how do you port it? How does it Live update?" Continued Vu. "There are lots of things like that we have to work through. But, at this point, we're really focused on making the PC game the best it could be.

"Once that's done, and if it hits critical mass, then all of those other things come really easy because we can figure out - is it worth funding this project? Is it worth funding an Xbox version? There's nothing to announce right now, but that's sort of like how we look at it."

His comments suggest that Maxis might focus on an Xbox 360 version if plans to develop Spore for the consoles go ahead:

"We're not working on an Xbox version right now that we can release with the PC version so, if we do an Xbox version, it would have to be down the road," said Vu.

He also confirmed that this was the same case for the Wii and PlayStation 3.

At the same Spore event, the Maxis team also spoke of their aims to evolve the game into a franchise. It was unclear whether this will be with sequels, expansion packs or downloadable content.

Patrick Buechner, Maxis' head of Global Product Marketing, commented: "We see Spore as a franchise, not just one big game launch."
