Valve confirms the release of the Source engine on Xbox 360...

Valve today confirmed the availability of the Source engine as an official middleware option for developers on the Xbox 360. The engine behind Half Life 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and the forthcoming Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, has been optimised to utilise the 360's graphics hardware and provides full support for Xbox Live.

"The combination of Source and the Xbox 360 provides game designers throughout the industry the chance to create powerful entertainment experiences," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "Whether they're pursuing a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres, Source and the Xbox 360 are designed to offer the flexibility and tools to allow designers to pursue any design imaginable."

It's currently unclear what optimisations have been introduced, though the next-generation renderer, cinematic physics and multiprocessor support talked about for Episode Two will likely feature.
