Sony Updates Folding@Home News

PS3's have doubled the computational power behind Stanford University's project; that's a lot of idle machines...
Whilst we wait for the defining videogame to show off the PlayStation3 capabilities, Sony's next-generation format is at least making up for some of that idle time by pushing the boundaries in terms of medical research with last month's Folding@Home application.
Since its launch, more than 250,000 unique PS3 owners have registered to the program, forming a distributed network to provide idle computational power for Stanford University's work into understanding complex protein folding, misfolding and related diseases. The adoption of the PS3 to the program has more than doubled the computing capacity of the network, which now achieves 700 teraflops at any single moment, and has had a knock-on effect with the number of PC's participating increasing by 20%.
From tomorrow, Sony will offer the 1.1 update to the Folding@Home application, which brings a number of improvements to enhance the overall experience. Increasing the speed at which the PS3 performs the folding calculations, the update will also increase the visibility of PS3 user's locations on the global map and allow for longer donor/team names.
"The PS3 turnout has been amazing, greatly exceeding our expectations and allowing us to push our work dramatically forward," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home program lead. "Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate. We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer's and other diseases."
"We continue to be thrilled with the ongoing contributions of the PS3 user community in helping the Folding@home program study the causes of many different diseases that afflict our society," said Masayuki Chatani, Corporate Executive and CTO Computer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "As we move forward, we are issuing a call to action for all PS3 owners around the world to download the Folding@home application and help this cause. These PS3 fans can also be part of history as the Folding@home distributed computing program inches closer to achieving a petaflop - a measure of computing power that has never before been reached."
Sony promises further support for similar distributed computing projects across a wide variety of academic fields, so at least PS3 owners can feel good about themselves during the wait for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and LittleBigPlanet.
