Sony, Toshiba Carry On With Individual Next-Gen DVD News

The stalemate continues as Sony and Toshiba throw weight behind their own standards...
The ongoing saga currently being fought between Sony and Toshiba today took yet another twist, as the two companies pledged to forge ahead with their individual plans.
Itâs believed that both companies were in negotiations to bring a single standard before the Next Generation DVD format, however comments from both sides at the time seemed to conflict with this. Reporting from a press conference held yesterday, Bloomberg quotes Sony Corp. President Ryoji Chubachi as saying, âA single standard is best for the consumer, but of course, we will continue to promote Blu-ray.â
Citing HD-DVD as cheaper, available sooner, easier to embed in other products and the fact itâs the only format recognised by the authoritative DVD Forum; Sony meanwhile boasts of the increased storage space on the Blu-ray compared to Toshibaâs. Support for both formats has been spread thinly, with the likes of Walt Disney Co. and EA supporting Blu-Ray, while New Line Cinema and Time Warner Inc.âs Warner Bros. are both siding with HD-DVD.
Given the relationship between Toshiba and Sony over the design, development and production of the CELL processor along with the reported importance placed on Blu-ray by the Sony Corp., the decision to engage in such a high-risk gamble appears to be a strange one and has naturally drawn comparisons to the Betamax/VHS conflict of the 1970âs and 80âs.
The two deciding factors that ultimately led to VHS triumphing over Betamax were price and storage space funnily enough, with both Sony and Toshiba sharing the spoils when it comes to the next-generation DVD format â“ although Toshibaâs evolving HD-DVD is rapidly approaching the same space afforded by Blu-Ray.
The largest concern would have to be the possibility of confusing consumers, which in turn could harm the penetration of next-generation DVD and have an affect on the $49 billion sales forecast by 2010.
Weâll have more on the situation soon.
