Early reports suggest that Sony may be selling some of its chip assets to Toshiba...


According to reports in last Saturday's Nikkei, a Japanese business daily, Sony may be planning to sell chip assets to Toshiba (which may include their operations for the Cell microprocessor at the heart of the PS3) for as much as 627 million euros (£431 million).

The PS3's Cell microprocessor was co-developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM. According to the reports, Sony will be seeking a joint venture with Toshiba should any sale of operations take place, to ensure that the supply of processors for their portfolio of games consoles can continue. Sony will be undertaking any possible sale in order to focus on their production of audiovisual equipment.

Falling far short of an all-out denial, the responses of Sony and Toshiba spokespeople imply that their may be some sort of a deal in the pipelines, but there is much to be decided prior to any agreements being reached.

Sony spokesman Tomio Takizawa commented that "Nothing has been concretely decided" regarding the rumoured deal, while Toshiba's Keisuke Omori stated: "We are considering various plans, but we cannot comment on individual cases."

not true. mine jumped 50 to 100 and i have had no problems since the update. i just hope that theres patches coming out for trophies soon...

very cool as in dead and yes sony admitted the new firmware can potentially kill a ps3 if the download leaps from 50% to 100% instead of ie 51%52%53% ect
