Sony Share Sale Hints Towards PS3 Price Cut? News

Sony looks to sell insurance division shares to focus on core divisions and possible PS3 price reduction...


Reports of Sony Corp. intentions to sell approximately $2.9 billion of shares in the company's insurance division, Sony Financial Holdings Inc., today become apparent, amidst increased speculation that the capital will be poured into the flagging PlayStation3.

Believed to be the largest initial public offering in Japan this year, the move comes after a turbulent recent time for world stock markets and could lead to a PlayStation3 price reduction to re-ignite interest in the third-placed format.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Mitsuhiro Osawa, a Tokyo-based analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co, claimed, "Sony could use the funds for various options to strengthen its electronics and game businesses,'' before concluding, "A cut in the price of the PlayStation 3 is one option."

Whilst a serious PS3 price reduction would undoubtedly help the console's position, it's unlikely Sony would jump into action and would have to tread carefully to avoid upsetting the four million PS3 owners.

i own a ps3. infact i just came off playing it. for methe ps3 is gd for about 1hour, than i get bored and dnt go on it agen until the next day. there is nothing dat can keep me interested in the ps3. the games and pure love e, online always glithche... [ Read full comment... ]

this a good thing over 9 yrs it will happen folk wiil soon tire of wii's and the xbox(which is nearly all shooters, fun 4 a while, but ps3 does more in all ways
