Sony Electronics has recently conducted a presentation at the Stanford University; cracking open specific details on the chips used to power the Sony PSP.
The PSP will be based around four key components, the main CPU core, the media engine, a dedicated graphics processor and the âVirtual Mobile Engineâ â“ designed to conserve battery life and will also be used in future versions of the Sony Walkman.
As stated back in May, the PSP will incorporate a 90-nm MIPS R4000 CPU, capable of running at speeds of up to 333MHz, with a data-bus that is capable of transferring data at 166MHz.
Power consumption has always been a crucial factor for the PSP and it appears that the designers have been working on a number of clever features to ensure the PSP provides the battery-life which was previously announced in May. The CPUâs core voltage will range between 0.8 and 1.2 volts; however the consumption of the 3D engine and other factors will play a part.
The presentation threw up a surprise in the fact that the only I/O functions talked about were the USB2.0 and Memory Stick; leaving many attendees questioning the lack of information on the proposed 802.11b WiFi connection.
The PSP graphics engine will feature an advanced 512-bit interface, which is capable of pushing 664 million pixels or 35 million polygons per second; whilst using their own proprietary graphics API has allowed the team to support a variety of graphics primitives, along with directional lighting, environment projection and texture mapping, fogging, clipping, alpha-blending, depth and stencil tests and dithering.
Although Sony were rumoured to be looking at increasing the total amount of video memory, the presentation confirmed that this hasnât been the case and that the PSP will feature 2MB of dedicated graphics memory, whilst the graphics processor will operate at speeds of up to 166MHz.
