Reports emerge that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is looking into the possibility of up to 160 job losses...
In an bid to streamline its operation, it's been reported that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is looking into the possibility of making up to 160 of its 1900 workforce redundant. News of the potential job losses first leaked onto a small number of publications including the industry-focused GamesIndustry.biz, which quoted a copy of a letter signed by SCEE boss David Reeves.
In the letter, Reeves stated that: "In order to further our market leadership we sometimes have to make difficult business decisions. The management of the company has concluded that we need to change our structure, streamline and strengthen our business operations - and that our cost base needs to be significantly reduced."
Losses seem to be planned across the board, across SCEE UK, Sony WorldWide Studios, and other local offices.
However, GameDaily.biz quotes Nick Sharples, SCEE's Director of Corporate Communications, who commented that the exact number of redundancies isn't yet written in stone: "We have informed our staff that we are considering proposals that may result in a number of redundancies across the SCEE Group in Europe...Until those consultations are complete we will not know how many redundancies may be needed."
Sharples has pitched the reason for the streamlining operation down to the on-going transition period between platform generations.
