Sony Drops PSP Price In US News

SCEA confirms a $30 reduction in the price of their portable system; no word on similar move in Europe...

Sony Computer Entertainment America has today confirmed a price drop for PSP by $30 to $169, backing up suggestions made by analysts in recent weeks.

In an announcement, SCEA boss Jack Tretton commented: "We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the 'Greatest Hits' library, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community."

Tretton continued: "We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP's lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend."

The move comes as Sony tries to re-ignite interest in their handheld, which has increasingly looked forlorn with UMD Video a near-dead format, and the Nintendo DS out-selling it at retail...perhaps the system's functionality with PlayStation3 will help?

Whether Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will make similar move is unclear.

UMD already dead. Sony has nothing to lose by adding
SD stuff on the Blu-ray discs for PSP viewing.

good point but i think i would only pay about $250 and not bother with the touch screen.with mobile tec in there you could play games over the net any time any where but only at a reasonable price of course.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be

JAZZ-1991, what the hell are you talking about? The PSP redesign is 19% slimmer and 33% lighter than the original PSP. The buttons are more responsive, it supports tv out, has twice the RAM. There is no need to make it any smaller, it feels great in ... [ Read full comment... ]
