Sony Cuts PS3 Launch Quota For Japan News

Further production problems push Sony into cutting the number of PlayStation3s for Japan by 20%, according to reports from the Far East...


Having already disappointed European gamers by delaying the launch of PlayStation3 in the territory until March 2007, it seems that Sony will be squeezing the number of launch units for Japan too, if reports from the Nikkei Keizai Shimbun newspaper prove to be accurate.

With the Sony-mad country already prepared to receive around 100,000 PlayStation3s for the November launch, the beleaguered electronics giant is rumoured to have cut that figure down to 80,000 units - a significant drop of 20%. The main problem according to the Nikkei Keizai Shimbun will be a familiar one: issues with the production of certain parts for the console.

The figure is far cry from the 900,000 PlayStation2 units that made it to Japanese retailers in 2000, and is the latest setback for the PS3 - though surely no hardware launch could experience so much bad luck as this???

Confirmation on the reports hasn't been made by Sony at this time, though if true, there's going to be a lot of nervous gamers in North America waiting to see if they're for the chop next...

not true. mine jumped 50 to 100 and i have had no problems since the update. i just hope that theres patches coming out for trophies soon...

very cool as in dead and yes sony admitted the new firmware can potentially kill a ps3 if the download leaps from 50% to 100% instead of ie 51%52%53% ect
