Sony Confirms Limited PS2 Backwards Compatibility News

With just four weeks before PlayStation3 arrives in Europe, SCEE decides to forget some of the past...
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has today confirmed that the European PlayStation3 units, which will be launching on March 23rd, will feature a new chassis - the off shoot of which is that the range of PlayStation2 titles backwards compatible with the next-gen system will be reduced compared to US and Japanese PS3s.
Making the announcement David Reeves, President of SCEE, said: "PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system...Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."
Describing how the strategy will focus on new titles for PS3 rather than expand the number of PlayStation2 titles backwards compatible with the system suggests that Sony won't be pursuing the expansion of emulators for too long after the system arrives next month - despite stating that "Some additional PS2 titles will become compatible on the PS3 system through regular downloadable firmware updates".
Come to think of it, when was the last time Microsoft released a list of original Xbox titles on the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list???
