Sony Boosts PSP News

Base model introduced; Flash & Extended RSS support; PSone download service and Camera + GPS peripherals...

Along with the scant information provided on the Playstation3, Sony also made a further commitment to the PSP, announcing a new Base model in black to be made available in Europe on March 22nd for 199 Euros. The model will follow to North Amerioca by the end of March for $199, whilst Japan will see a Ceramic White model released for 20,790 yen.

Confirming that support for Macromedia Flash will finally be offered in a firmware update, Sony will also extend the RSS support to enable users to save and playback internet radio and entertainment movie content.

Making a first appearance at E3' , Sony has additionally confirmed the rumoured release of the camera and GPS receiver peripherals in the autumn. The new peripherals will add EyeToy like functionality to the PSP, along with video chat and GPS features.

Most significantly SCEI will introduce a new download service, providing selected popular Playstation titles from the past; an obvious sign that a similar service is planned for the Playstation 3.

Naturally the introduction of a base model is an attempt to boost sales in the competition with the Nintendo DS, however Sony has yet to commit to an "enhanced" PSP which has been rumoured in recent weeks. Whether this provides the scope to do so at a alter date, when presumably disgruntled early adopters will feel less hard done by remains to be seen.

lol an 80 gb psp is not possible unless they use ssd hard drives which cost sh*t loads to buy independantly maybe you should get used to dreaming, though if they stop making any games for it or make a psp that could only get games from the ps3 then y... [ Read full comment... ]

UMD already dead. Sony has nothing to lose by adding
SD stuff on the Blu-ray discs for PSP viewing.

good point but i think i would only pay about $250 and not bother with the touch screen.with mobile tec in there you could play games over the net any time any where but only at a reasonable price of course.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be
