Sonic Rivals Confirmed For PSP News

SEGA confirms development on Sonic's PSP debut, but it doesn't seem to be the mythical Project S...

SEGA Europe and SEGA of America have today announced Sonic Rivals for PSP; the first Sonic title for Sony's handheld at first glance it appears that the game is the mythical Project S, which was first announced back in 2004. All isn't as it seems however, with the development team not the one you'd expect. Instead of Sonic Team, the responsibility of bringing the super-sonic blue hedgehog to the PSP rests with Foundation9's Backbone Entertainment who've previously produced Death Jr. for the system.

Set for release during autumn 2006, Sonic Rivals sees some friendly competition between Sonic and Knuckles develop into a wider race with the likes of Shadow joining in. Each of the four characters will have their own respective storylines through the course of the game, with players also having to avoid traps and obstacles set by Dr. Eggman.

"Sonic Rivals brings back the classic 2D platform gameplay that started it all, and douses it with vibrant three-dimensional environments," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "In this heated rivalry, gamers are tested to prove not only who's the fastest but who has the best head-to-head gameplay strategy."

There are sure to be some Sonic fans reeling from the news that Sonic Team have left this title to a third-party developer, but hopefully Backbone will be able to do SEGA's mascot franchise justice.

One more thing: what ever happened to Project S?

We'll have more news shortly...
