November sales figures in the US show tough starts for Crysis, UT3 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune...
While titles such as Assassin's Creed and CoD4 rocketed into the consumer stratosphere during November, spare a thought for those triple-A titles that didn't fare quite so well in the US according to NPD. Crysis, Unreal Tournament III and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune all came in with unimpressive figures.
Crysis (released November 13th) pulled in 86,633 unit sales in November, while fellow PC offering Unreal Tournament III (November 19th) came off even worse with just 33,995 sales. Both titles failed to break into the top ten of the all-format chart and compare to 1.57 million unit sales for the number one game, CoD4 on Xbox 360.
One possible reason for Crysis' slow start could be its lofty system specs, while Epic will surely be hoping that December's PlayStation 3 release of UT3 will bolster overall sales. However, judging by unit sales of the PS3's major first-party release during November (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune) Epic may not want to rely on Sony's struggling machine for such a lifeline.
Drake hauled in only 117,000 unit sales after its November 19th release. Although, when this is compared with previous first-party PS3 releases, this figure doesn't look quite so bad. In their first month after release, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (74,500 unit sales), Warhawk (58,600) and Lair (46,500) all fared badly. More worryingly, the most unit-sales for a first-party PS3 title have come from Heavenly Sword (139,000) in September.
With multi-format releases such as Assassin's Creed achieving 2.5 million unit sales worldwide so far, November's NPD figures are a textbook example of why the console exclusive game is gradually going the way of the Dodo.
NPD figures taken from reports on 1up, Gamasutra and Next-Gen.
