Thirteen months after its debut, the PS2 video karaoke series passes a key sales barrier...
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has today announced that global sales of its SingStar franchise have now passed through the two million mark. With the third edition of the series SingStar PopWorld (localised title for the UK) going on sale last month it seems that the franchise is continuing to gather momentum.
Developed at SCEEâs London Studio, localised versions of the SingStar series have been released in several European territories as well as hitting Australia, with the company currently working on a new addition to the franchise based on hits of the 1980s (synth-pop heaven here we come.) SCEE have another reason to celebrate the SingStar series as it became the biggest IP of 2004, following in the footsteps of EyeToy in 2003, and The Getaway in 2002; a nice hat-trick for the European company.
Announcing the news, Phil Harrison, Executive Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said, âThe tremendous success of SingStar reflects our commitment to innovation and broadening the appeal of computer entertainmentâ¦For the third year running, SCEE's London Studios have introduced another massive international hit".
âWe have been overwhelmed by how warmly SingStar has been received by the music industry,â said Sergio Pimentel, Music Licensing and A&R Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. âWe have licensed more than 250 songs for the SingStar series to date, and we would like to thank all of the record companies and music publishers for their massive contribution to the success of the games.â
Weâll have more on the forthcoming 80s orientated SingStar shortly...
