A Bard’s Tale set for a European release in March thanks to a new deal with publisher Ubisoft…
The RPG genre in Europe is set to include a more light-hearted title in March thanks to a new deal announced by Ubisoft and developer inXile. The game was originally on the books of collapsed publisher Acclaim, but after languishing in videogame limbo, the French publisher has finally saved it for a European release. Set in Medieval times, A Bardâs Tale is the follow-up to the classic Apple II game of the same name, and follows the story of the player-controlled Bard, who travels the land bringing his sarcastic ways to all and sundry. Voiced by Cary Elwes, who previous starred in the spoof films âHot Shotsâ and âRobin Hood: Men in Tights,â the Bardâs motivation in life, at least according to the Press Release, is âcoin and cleavageâ so expect bawdy, bardy adventures throughout.
Players are able to choose through the game whether to speak ânicelyâ or âsnarkyâ to characters that they meet on their travels, which in turn affect the events in the game. A Bardâs Tale take a top-down view of the world and uses Snowblind Studioâs engine used for Baldurâs Gate: Dark Alliance for the visuals.
Announcing the EU release, John Parkes, EMEA Marketing Director at Ubisoft, said, âThe Bardâs Tale⢠is a refreshingly different RPG, able to poke irreverent fun at both the genre and itself. It manages to respect the rules of its category while breaking them at the same time. We are delighted to introduce players to a title that can both satisfy those looking to try a lighter RPG as well as those RPG aficionados ready to sit back and laugh.â
It seems that the developers are also pleased that the game will finally be released on European shores, as CEO and Founder of inXile Entertainment, Brian Fargo said, âWe think European gamers are waiting for an intelligently funny game, and are delighted to be working with Ubisoft to make sure they find out first hand what gamers in North America have been laughing about the last couple months!â
