SecuROM Guards Alone In The Dark News

Controversial copy-protection software protects the PC version of Alone in the Dark...

On the day of release Atari today revealed a new fear for PC fans interested in Alone in the Dark: the game includes the highly controversial SecuROM copy protection technology.

Prior to installing Alone in the Dark the game requires an internet connection to download an additional component, which is the source of contention amongst the anti-SecuROM establishment.

Upon activation the game can be played offline, suggesting that Mass Effect's controversial 10-day reactivation setup (promptly removed) won't be appearing in the game. It also appears that Alone in the Dark won't limit the number of units you can install the game onto, with the only stipulation being that to install the game on a new PC unit you must revoke the license from the first machine when uninstalling.

So certainly not as contentious as recent heavy hitters such as Bioshock and Mass Effect, though we suspect it's still going to irk one or two PC fans - let the tirade begin...

Securom....thanks for the heads up. I won't be playing this one. Ever. Publishers are really stupid, there will be a hack on it im sure within a week or 2.

Yep, that's why I turn all consoles now. When you are done with a day worth of work, you just want to sit down and play your games; not go to more work to get your games working before you can enjoy.

When will publishers finally learn that this stupid DRM bull sugar is just pissing off potential and legit customers?
