The United Nations Millenium Campaign urges Second Life subscribers to STAND UP against poverty...
Second Life continues to provide a platform for promoting real world events in Linden Lab's virtual creation. Having previously witnessed Hollywood premiere events and BBC Radio 1 2006 One Big Weekend, the United Nations Millennium Campaign is asking Residents to group together in the "STAND UP" initiative.
Aiming to set an official Guiness World Record for the greatest number of people to physically and symbolically stand up against poverty, the Second Life event takes place alongside events occuring across the world, from New York Times Square to a group of impoverished rural women in Nepal.
"Second Life offered a unique venue for the Campaign to reach out to a young and active audience," said Amil Husain, Global Youth Coordinator for the UN Millennium Campaign. "We're very excited about the virtual SUGARCULT concert and having the residents of Second Life join the global campaign to set a Guinness World Record."
Second Life's renowned Resident, Aimee Weber, has been on-hand to create special STAND UP kiosks throughout the game world, offering participating Residents with a free White Band to demonstrate their support. SugarCult will also be lending their support to the campaign, performing a virtual concert and becoming the first major group to perform in Second Life in the process.
STAND UP will take place between 15th October 10:00 (GMT) and 16th October 10:00 (GMT), during which time the Millennium Campaign will join forces with partners across the world including GCAP, the one campaign, trade unions, faith based groups, local governments, youth groups, Parliamentarians, sporting associations, media and other key partners to mobilize thousands of people to take a stand, showing solidarity for ending poverty by 2015.
