In an interview with one German newspaper, Hajime Satomi confirms his ambitions for the former hardware manufacturer...
You could be forgiven for thinking that the Golden Age of SEGA was far behind us; days where the console war was between SEGA's Mega Drive and Nintendo's SNES seem to be nothing more than a distant memory, with the company also suffering the ignominy of pulling out of the hardware market with Dreamcast in 2001.
But speaking to German newspaper Der Spiegel, SEGA boss Hajime Satomi has revealed the software developer/publisher's ambitions for the next few years.
Acknowledging that SEGA is currently ranked as the eighth largest videogames publisher behind the likes of Ubisoft, THQ, and Activision, Satomi-san said that by 2010 he'd like to see SEGA rise to a top three position...though fifth place would still be satisfactory if there's slower growth in the industry.
Acquisitions and partnerships in recent months, such as the take-over of UK studio Sports Interactive (Football Manager) and the deal with Obsidian Entertainment (which is currently working on an as yet untitled game), have been signed to strengthen SEGA's position in the West - which is key to fulfilling Satomi-san's goals.
If SEGA manages to fulfil the targets set by Satomi-san, perhaps the publisher could find itself in the middle of a new Golden Age...
We'll have more news shortly...
