In an interesting stroke of licensing Sony Europe grab exclusive rights to one of the most exclusive sports in the world.
In a four-year deal, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that it has secured the exclusive rights to publish games based around the Formula One season. The rights are for Europe only, but given that a lot of Formula One courses are based in Europe this doesn't seem like a bad move.
Thankfully this deal should cut down on the number of Formula One video games we see released, however EA have a multi-format title based on F1 coming out, currently entitled âF1 Career Challengeâ.
We hope that Sony are planning to do something innovative with the license, something along the lines of Pro Race Driver perhaps. We will see soon enough as the first game to bear the official F1 under this new deal is the brilliantly titled Formula One 2003; currently in development at Sonyâs Liverpool Studios â“ who took over the F1 license after the first two superb titles from Bizarre Creations on the PSOne - F1 and F1 '97 - before Bizarre were nabbed by Sega for the Dreamcast and MSR.
Formula One 2003 is boasting realistic damage, including engine blowouts, and a real experience of the race weekend that has become more interesting because of the recent rule changes. The single lap, all or nothing, Saturday qualifying sessions should lend itself more to a videogame than the traditional longer approach. Advanced AI is supposed to make your opponents react in a manner befitting their real-life counterparts, and again it will be nice to see how this develops over a season or whether this is just limited to reactions within individual races.
This should all be wrapped up with some TV style presentation, with real-life commentators such as the UK's Martin Brundle, Heiko Wasser from Germany and the Finish Matti Kyllonen for instance. What we are really interested in though are things like whether your team will hassle you if for instance you blow your big qualifying chance, or race, when you really need the points.
We will keep you up to speed with Formula One 2003 as we keep tabs on it.
