SCEE Confirms Euro PS3 Launch News

March 23rd, £425 and over 30 games set for launch...

Although it's been mentioned once or twice during the last week, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today finally confirmed details for the European launch of the PlayStation3.

Suggested earlier last week, the PS3 will arrive in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Australasia on March 23rd at a price of 599 euros (£425/999 AUD 1199.95 NZD). Likewise the official announcement confirms that only the 60GB model will be available, initially at least.

SCEE has committed one million units for the launch, which should ensure the customary anarchy that accompanies a new system; no word yet on how quickly SCEE plans to keep stocks replenished, but we expect these details to filter through in the next few days.

A line-up of over 30 titles will be available for the launch, obvious notable highlights including Resistance: The Fall of Man and MotorStorm, along with the likes of Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Chapionship Edition and Ridge Racer 7. Further support for the launch has also been confirmed from Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

Recent titles added to the PlayStation Network will be immediately available for the early adopters in Europe, including the likes of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo HD. These will also be joined by casual games such as Go! Sodoku and Go! Puzzle, along with innovative offerings such as Blast Factor and flOw.

A system update will also coincide with the launch, though Sony has yet to confirm specific details about this.

Announcing the launch details, David Reeves, President of SCEE said, "Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the SCEE territories. To be able to launch with over 30 titles across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in Europe have been crying out for."
