Sony Computer Entertainment America's COO paints a picture of apathy towards Xbox 360 threat...
Speaking to online financial publication TheStreet.com, SCEA's Chief Operating Officer Jack Tretton has downplayed any advantage earned by Microsoft launching the Xbox 360 months ahead of Sony's own PlayStation3.
Citing the fact that both the PlayStation and PlayStation2 weren't the first to launch in their respective generations, Tretton said, "It ultimately came down to the system and what consumers preferred. At the end of the day, what you do in the first year, and whether you do 6 or 10 million units [as Microsoft plans in the first year of Xbox 360 sales] does not determine whether you're successful or not."
A massive boost for PlayStation2 in the current-generation war was the delayed exclusivity enjoyed with the Grand Theft Auto series, something that Microsoft has countered by securing GTAIV for Xbox 360 the same day it's to be released on PS3. But Tretton disagrees that the deal is a huge blow for Sony:
"I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto... I don't think it hurts us. No, I really don't."
Tretton's comments come amidst continuing uncertainty about whether the PlayStation3 will be the success that Sony hopes; in May one analyst even proposed that the addition of blu-ray in the console is a massive bet by the company that could even cost it the number one spot in the next-generation.
